We want to extend a big mahalo to all of our donors! Thanks to you, Blood Bank of Hawaii donated $15,000 to Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund as part of our winter “Maui Strong. Blood Strong.” campaign.

As part of the partnership, Blood Bank of Hawaii made a monetary donation for every blood donation received during our winter months when donations tend to decrease.

Last week’s Maui Blood Drive was a success! We’re thrilled to announce that we exceeded our goal with a total of 481 pints collected, thanks to the incredible support of the community. What’s even more remarkable is that among these donors, we welcomed 55 first-time donors who bravely stepped forward to make a difference. Donors like Joshua Mori a Junior at Maui High School are one of the many first-time donors.

Meet William, one of our beloved milestone donors, who has donated blood 162 times! We are truly grateful for his dedication to helping the community. Although he is no longer able to donate blood due to a past surgery, he continues to support our mission through volunteering and recruiting new donors!

Recently, he encouraged his niece, Sharon, to donate for the first time at our Maui Blood Drive. Together, they’re saving lives and spreading love! Mahalo to William and his unwaivering support for highlighting the importance of donating blood.

At only four years old, Ruth Mersburg of Kona was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. During her battle, Ruth received over 20 different transfusions, not including the countless pints required during major surgeries.

While in the hospital, Ruth experienced a moment of urgency when platelets were unexpectedly needed, and none were available on hospital shelves. Desperate to help, her parents offered to donate themselves, but were not elible to donate at the time. Luckily, Blood Bank of Hawaii sprung into action and sourced a donor to help provide Ruth the life-saving platelets she needed.

Ruth tragically passed away in December 2023 after lasting complications of Neuroblastoma. Her story is an important reminder that your single blood or platelet donation can help someone overcome health challenges during a critial situation.
